National BIM Report 2017

Posted by

Britain recently issued the “National BIM Report 2017” reporting on the status of BIM in the UK. Progress in England has been impressive since the government took the lead in pressing for wider use of 3D design tools. BIM adoption by AEC firms has gone from 13% in 2011 to 62% in 2017. At this time, small firms are at 48% and medium and large practices are at 75%.

The national effort has been based on building an infrastructure for adoption based on “BIM Building Blocks”

  • Standards and Regulations
  • BIM Specifications and Guidance
  • BIM Knowledge
  • BIM Management
  • BIM Co-ordination with a Geometry Model
  • Standardized BIM Objects

The most recent survey of BIM adoption and needs shows the importance of the Standardized BIM Objects building block. 71% of practices say they “need manufacturers to provide us with BIM objects. It is also notable that 84% say that they “need generic objects, not just manufacturer's objects.

Clearly, the need for BIM content has not been satisfied, even though the government has created a “National BIM Library”. It should be noted that there are also a number of private companies that attempt to meet the need for BIM content (both ARCHICAD objects and Revit families). A partial list of firms with UK-oriented content includes BIM Store, BIM Object, BIM Box and SpecifiedBy.

With all these people working to solve the BIM content problem over many years, why does the issue persist for such a large number of practices? What do you think? Leave a comment below.
